Rockstar reportedly plans to release GTA 6 on PC during the first quarter of 2027.
GamesBeat reported the news based on four sources who asked to remain anonymous. Rockstar and parent company Take-Two are yet to comment.
If true, it would mean GTA 6 hitting PC just a few months after it launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026. Some had anticipated a longer wait for the game on PC, given it took nearly two years for GTA 5 to launch on PC after consoles.
The PC launch may tie into the release of GTA 6’s multiplayer mode, which fans are calling GTA Online 2 while they wait for official word from Rockstar. While Rockstar has yet to confirm an online mode for GTA 6, last month Twitch boss Dan Clancy said GTA Online 2 — or whatever GTA 6’s multiplayer mode is called — will launch next year.
Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has always responded with vague comments when asked about the prospect of launching GTA 6 on PC, pointing to Rockstar for announcements. In May, Zelnick told Bloomberg that Rockstar “always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core. Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”
Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5, LA Noire, Max Payne 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2 all came to PC after consoles. And while GTA’s core audience may be on console, it has a huge fanbase of active players on PC, fueled by GTA Online and role-play servers.
Indeed, 12 months ago, Zelnick said the industry was “moving towards PC,” telling CNBC’s Squawk Box that the video game business was trending towards “open rather than closed.”
In 2024, Zelnick was asked if the lack of a PC version of GTA 6 was set in stone. Here’s his response in full:
Well, the lack of an announcement is not something that could be set in stone as near as I could tell, because the only thing that happens after the lack of an announcement is an announcement, I suppose, or a continuing lack of an announcement, I guess that could happen too. It doesn’t seem to me that either would be set in stone.
But Rockstar has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they will make more announcements in due time. I do believe that the right strategy for our business is to be where the consumer is, and historically what this company has done is address consumers anywhere they are, on any platform that makes sense, over time.
Assuming GTA 6 does come to PC early next year, one of the big questions players will have is how it runs compared to on consoles. Rockstar has yet to confirm the performance of GTA 6 on consoles, so we’re still in the dark when it comes to frames-per-second and resolution. But the expectation is that any PC version would be capable of better performance, assuming your rig is powerful enough.
