Ubisoft Bids Farewell to Assassin’s Creed Shadows With Final Story Update

The final Assassin’s Creed Shadows content update will add one last chapter to the story of Naoe and Yasuke, a tough new challenge mode, and let you dress up as Edward Kenway from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Ubisoft previously confirmed it was calling time on Shadows after dwindling support in recent months and just one major post-launch expansion, and as Resynced’s arrival lies on the horizon, just a few weeks away.

Thankfully, tomorrow’s update looks to be a sizable send-off, as the series’ Japan-set story wraps up for good with the arrival of a major Templar threat hunting Yasuke. Of the two protagonists, the samurai’s story was most in need of closure following the Naoe-focused Claws of Awaji add-on last year. A teaser released today suggests we’ll also get a little more Animus story, too, via a fresh rift.

Another major addition is Domains, an endgame challenge mode where gear-loving fans will be tasked with min-maxing builds to conquer brutal combat arenas. Exclusive endgame gear will be offered as rewards, including what looks to be some legacy items (Eivor’s axe from Valhalla?).

Two new Animus projects will also be unlocked, and intriguingly, at least one of these will be progressable in Black Flag Resynced as well. You can get the leap on this now by playing Shadows, where you’ll unlock Edward Kenway’s Assassin robes for Naoe and Blackbeard’s outfit for Yasuke, as well as additional lore.

And that’s your lot. While there’s still understandable excitement for the brilliant Black Flag’s return, tomorrow’s final update for Shadows marks the end of an era for the franchise — one which many fans who had spent a decade wishing for a samurai-set entry may feel didn’t entirely go to plan.

From various controversies that distracted attention pre-launch, a high-profile delay, and reports that more post-launch content was shelved, Shadows will certainly go down as a memorable entry in the Assassin’s Creed saga — although maybe not always for all the right reasons.

“Here we are, at the end of all things,” noted Shadows assistant game director Simon Lemay-Comtois, who has been the public face of the game’s post-launch content updates over the past year. “We really hope you’ll enjoy what we’ve been cooking for this last chapter of Sengoku-era Japan. Experiencing this adventure alongside each and every one of you has been truly inspiring.

“Your thoughts and feedback has opened up a conversation between us, the developers, and you, the community, paving a more open future for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. On behalf of everyone here at Ubisoft who made Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we thank you.”
