Tom Holland has once again discussed passing the Spider-Man torch to another, younger actor, this time suggesting the star of Adolescence for the iconic role.
In a profile published in Esquire, Holland singled out Owen Cooper, the 16-year-old British actor who played teenage murder suspect Jamie Miller in last year’s Netflix megahit, Adolescence, as the potential next Peter Parker.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome,” Holland said. “Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now.”
Last month, Holland said he wanted to help set up a new era for the Spider-Man franchise, shepherding in a fresh Spider-Man, or Spider-Woman, as his replacement. "For whoever's next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter," Holland told Empire.
The big question is, how many more Spider-Man movies does the 30-year-old Tom Holland have left in him? He’s in next month’s Brand New Day, of course, but he’s not yet confirmed for either this December’s Avengers: Doomsday or next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars, although it’s hard to imagine Spider-Man failing to show up at some point. Could Brand New Day mark the beginning of the end for Holland’s time as Spider-Man?
There is a danger of reading too much into these sorts of comments. Some expect Brand New Day will begin a fresh trilogy for Holland’s Spider-Man. Indeed, Holland has himself suggested he hopes to return several more times. Still, he can’t play Spider-Man forever. There will come a time when Sony and Marvel Studios have to replace Holland as Spider-Man, perhaps the most bankable superhero in the world. After all, the billion dollar Spider-Man movies must continue.
Meanwhile, in the same interview with Esquire, Holland confirmed his marriage to Spider-Man co-star Zendaya, although he refused to offer any details. Zendaya plays Michelle Jones Watson in Holland’s Spider-Man movies.
