Marvel has released an official plot description for Avengers: Doomsday, detailing the scale and scope of the movie as the MCU's Multiverse Saga "begins its final chapter."
Notably, the description discusses the role of "beloved heroes from three distinct universes" being set on a "deadly collision course." Of course, we have a good idea which universes these will be.
In the continuity of the main MCU (Earth-616), two Avengers teams now exist, with the main group led by Sam Wilson/Captain America. Then there's the New Avengers (formerly known as the Thunderbolts) which includes Yelena Belova and Bucky Barnes. Of course, OG Avenger Thor is still knocking around (as is Hulk, but he's in Spider-Man: Brand New Day instead), as well as other heroes such as Ant-Man and Shang-Chi. And then there's the Wakanda contingent: Shuri, M'Baku, Namor and so forth.
Outside the main MCU, but already on course to join it: The Fantastic Four, including Reed Richards and Sue Storm, who popped up in a new Avengers: Doomsday teaser just today. While originally from Earth-828, the team were seen hopping realities in Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers' post-credits scene.
Finally, there's the X-Men from the original Fox movie universe, dubbed Earth-10005. We know that a small group of surviving X-Men including Professor X, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Magneto will feature. This is also the universe where fans presume Monica Rambeau ended up in the finale of The Marvels, which saw her meet Hank McCoy/Beast.
"Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday," the movie's description reads, as seen on Rotten Tomatoes. "Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
What could the existential threat be? It'd be easy to say Doctor Doom, though this description likely refers to the concept of Incursions – realities crashing into each other, leaving at least one of them annihilated. We've seen the threat of this emerge in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, as well as Loki. And numerous MCU projects in this recent saga have seen multiversal travel, which presumably does not help preserve the fabric of reality (looking at you, Deadpool).
Intriguingly, this description does not seem to reference the location of Steve Rogers, whose whereabouts are unknown following his mission to return the Infinity Stones. Sure, he's shacked up with Peggy Carter, but where is that house he's in? MCU time travel rules would suggest he'd have ended up in a branched universe (even though he mysteriously ends up back in the main MCU as an elderly man – a plot hole fans expect Doomsday and/or Secret Wars to explain).
The fact there's no mention of his location as a fourth separate universe could help fuel rumors that Rogers is actually hiding out in a universe we've seen before. But it also seems likely we'll see other corners of the multiverse in Doomsday too. Loki being part of the movie suggests a trip to the TVA is on the cards, and there is plenty of speculation we may also see a return of other Marvel greats such as Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. But clearly, those three main realities listed above are set to be the core focus.
Although we've gotten a few teaser trailers for Avengers: Doomsday, the full trailer has only been seen by CinemaCon attendees up to this point. All will be revealed on December 18, when Avengers: Doomsday finally arrives. In the meantime, though, stand by for much more this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, where IGN will be reporting from the show.
