If you’re a ‘90s kid like me, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie trilogy is basically your entire childhood in a nutshell — sorry, half-shell. All three movies, which came out from 1990 – 1993, are collected in this totally tubular 4K collection from Arrow Video. And right now, despite its $100 MSRP, the set is available at Walmart for $29.99. That’s a radical deal if there ever was one.
TMNT Trilogy in 4K for $29.99
For those who didn’t live through the early nineties, it’s hard to overstate how big the Ninja Turtles were. They were roughly as big as Taylor Swift is today, but probably even more ubiquitous. They had a hit cartoon on TV. They were in comic books and in toy aisles at the store. They were on T-shirts, thermoses, and lunchboxes at school. Heck, they were in lunch boxes at school. One of their biggest and most popular feats was that they had a trilogy of major motion pictures, released in theaters over the course of just four years (we used to make things in this country, people).
What is there to say about these movies? You’ve got mutant turtle teens Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo fighting Shredder and the Foot Clan under the sage guidance of Splinter the rat. All three movies are rated PG and fine for kids to watch.
They’re billed as action comedy movies, but the first one, from 1990, is the darkest in tone. I think it took cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which came out the year before with many parents thinking it was too dark and violent for kids. TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze came out in 1991 and is notably more comedic, with cartoonish slapstick action and daffy villains in the form of Tokka and Rahzar. TMNT III, from 1993, is the least serious of them all, with the reptilian heroes being transported back to feudal Japan for a time-traveling adventure.
They’re all fun to watch even to this day, and this is the cheapest this set has ever been. For this ‘90s kid, picking up the trilogy is an easy choice.
