Miami Vice ’85: New Title Revealed for Michael B. Jordan-Austin Butler Movie

Universal Pictures’ and director Joseph Kosinski’s big screen reboot of Miami Vice has a new title befitting its period setting: Miami Vice ‘85.

The title change comes via Variety. As revealed when the movie’s release date was announced, Miami Vice ‘85 “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami,” the decade when the original NBC TV series aired.

Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are lined up to star as undercover detectives Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett, respectively.

In the NBC TV series pilot, New York City cop Ricardo Tubbs travels down to Miami in search of his brother’s killer and eventually teams up with local undercover detective James “Sonny” Crockett, who’s also after the same drug dealers since they killed his partner.

In the end, Tubbs transferred to Miami and became Crockett’s partner and best friend as they went on a litany of dangerous undercover missions in the hugely influential 1984-89 TV series.

Miami Vice ‘85 is produced by Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski and written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann.

Miami Vice ‘85 begins filming later this year and will be shot for IMAX. The movie is scheduled to open August 6, 2027.
