Marvel Suffers Layoffs in Wake of New Job Cuts at Disney

Marvel has been hit with layoffs as part of job cuts at Disney affecting up to 1,000 people, according to Deadline.

The layoffs have apparently affected Marvel’s operations in both New York and Burbank, and have touched on most areas of the company. This includes comics, TV and film production, its finance and legal departments, and more.

Job losses in visual development are reportedly major. It’s understood that, going forward, artists will now be contractors hired project-to-project and managed by a small, in-house team that has remained. Originally formed in 2010, Marvel’s visual development team of artists, illustrators, designers, and other specialists has historically been a key component of steering the look and feel of film and TV productions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a note sent to Disney staff, new CEO Josh D’Amaro explained the layoffs were a result of the company seeking to “streamline” its operations in order to “foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce.”

Disney last streamlined 7,000 employees out of their jobs back in 2023.
