House of the Dragon Season 3 Trailer and Launch Date Confirmed

HBO has announced a release date for House of the Dragon Season 3, with the Game of Thrones spinoff returning to air new episodes in July.

Viewers will be able to watch the House of the Dragon Season 3’s first episode via HBO Max on July 3, the streaming service confirmed today, with further episodes releasing weekly. The eight-episode season will then conclude on August 9.

A fresh trailer for the new season gives a hint at the many bloody battles to come, as various factions continue to fight for control of the Seven Kingdoms. “There will be no doubt who the gods have chosen to rule,” Rhaenyra Targaryen says, as plenty of fire-breathing action takes place. Season 3 sees the return of Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, alongside numerous others, including famous faces such as Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Rhys Ifans, Happy Valley’s James Norton, Assassin’s Creed Origins’ Abubakar Salim, and Fantastic Beasts’ Dan Fogler.

HBO owner Warner Bros. is currently going hard on its Game of Thrones franchise with a big-budget movie in the works, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, in addition to two more seasons of House of the Dragon (including the upcoming Season 3) and more episodes of second TV spinoff Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Last week, Warner Bros. chief marketing officer Shauna Spenley suggested there had never been more demand for Game of Thrones, as fans no longer wanted to wait years before each new project comes out. By the time House of the Dragon Season 3 arrives this summer, two years will have passed since the finale of Season 2: a wait that neccessitates other Game of Thrones projects launching in the meantime to keep viewers engaged.

“Game of Thrones is this incredible IP that seems in some ways infinite,” Spenley said. “And we saw just a couple of months ago with Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is really lighter fare of that IP, just kind of go supernova all over the world. And so there’s clearly a lot of demand. I think this theatrical endeavor will be no exception. House of the Dragon is coming later this summer.

“So, it feels now like it really has an audience that has long-term expectations. Again, habitual expectations. They don’t really want to wait a couple of years for every installment.”

HBO announced the upcoming slate of Game of Thrones spinoff TV shows with a Marvel-style roadmap, further reinforcing Warner Bros.’ franchise ambitions. House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are each set for new seasons on HBO, taking fans up to 2028. In January, HBO was said to be in “very early development” on a Game of Thrones spinoff starring Arya Stark, following the collapse of a previous sequel idea that would have featured Jon Snow. A new Game of Thrones prequel is set to dramatize the events of Robert’s Rebellion, and debut on the UK stage this summer.

Meanwhile, George R.R. Martin himself has said there’s no plan if he dies before completing Winds of Winter, and the Game of Thrones series simply “won’t be finished.”
