Henry Cavill’s Live-Action Voltron Movie Skips Theaters for Prime Video Release

Don’t expect to see the Henry Cavill-led Voltron movie in cinemas when it’s finally released in 2027. IGN has confirmed that the live-action movie based on the animated franchise will premiere exclusively on Prime Video.

Movieweb and DiscussingFilm recently reported that the Voltron movie would skip a theatrical release in favor of streaming. A source, however, tells IGN that was always the plan and that Amazon greenlit the movie with the intention of it being a streaming exclusive.

Voltron was made by Amazon MGM Studios, which also releases films theatrically, most recently The Sheep Detectives and Crime 101. Amazon MGM will also release James Bond 26 theatrically.

Red Notice and Skyscraper’s Rawson Marshall Thurber directs Voltron from a script he wrote with Ellen Shanman.

The original series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, ran from 1984–1985. Later series included Voltron: The Third Dimension (1998–2000), Voltron Force (2011–2012), and Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016–2018).

The show followed a team of space explorers who pilot smaller robots that combine into one giant super robot (aka Voltron). Thurber has previously stated in a video message to fans that his movie aims to “stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron. In this film, we’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world, but we’re going to stay true to…those iconic elements that you love, that I love. And I’m so excited to share it with you.”

Thurber is also a producer on the film along with Todd Lieberman via Hidden Pictures, Bob Koplar, and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman.

In addition to Henry Cavill, the live-action Voltron film also stars Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Rita Ora, John Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, and Tharanya Tharan.
