The One-Year War will be coming to Netflix this October with Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, the gritty new film animated in Unreal Engine 5 that will add a new chapter to the storied franchise.

A new trailer was revealed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, showing off battles between GMs, Zakus, and of course, the Gundam itself (or one of them, at least) along with an October 17 release date. It brings the franchise back to the wartime drama that defined the original 1979 anime, giving it a vibe similar to 08th MS Team and other stories set within the Universal Century's central conflict.

The story description is below.

In the year Universal Century 0079, a state of war began when the Principality of Zeon declared its independence from the Earth Federation government. In the war's opening stages, the Zeon forces maintained an advantage thanks to the effectiveness of their new weapon, the mobile suit. However, they lacked the fighting strength to fully conquer Earth, and the war became a stalemate.

Eleven months after the outbreak of war, a base in Zeon-occupied Eastern Europe is captured by the Federation Forces. A Zeon composite battalion is sent to recapture the base, and among its members are Solari and her Red Wolf Squadron, a mobile suit team that has only just arrived from space.

The trailer also included a release date, revealing that it will be out on Netflix on October 17.

While Requiem for Vengeance will retain much of the look and feel of Gundam, it will differ from other stories set within the universe in that it will be animated in CG — the first since 2004's MS IGLOO. It is directed by Erasmus Brosdau and written by Gavin Hignight, with animation handled by Safehouse, and will run for six episodes.

It is yet one more attempt to bring the franchise to a western audience, which it has at times struggled to connect with. Other recent initiatives include a crossover with Call of Duty, with a shooter also in development for Fortnite.

When Requiem for Vengeance releases in October, it will join several other Gundam shows on Netflix, including the original movie trilogy, Char's Counterattack, and the recently released Gundam Hathaway. You can also check out our list of the best anime releasing this summer.
