Despite a potential Paramount acquisition on the horizon, HBO continues to put out some of the best content in streaming. In addition to a great movie selection arriving in June, we’re also getting a smattering of enticing HBO originals this month. What’s Worth Watching?
House of the Dragon S3 Premiere – June 21
One of the biggest HBO Originals coming, or rather, returning, to the service in June is House of the Dragon, coming back for its third season. The Game of Thrones spin-off was originally inspired by the Targaryen history depicted in Fire & Blood, with childhood friendships unraveling into a disastrous civil conflict that every dragon and dragon heir ends up involved in.
Expectations are high coming off the success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but Season 3 of HotD should at the very least bring some more action.
Rick and Morty S9 Episodes – June 15
Speaking of up and down moments, Rick and Morty also recently returned for a new season. Unlike previous seasons, new episodes will be coming to HBO Max sooner rather than later. IGN’s own Jesse Shedeen got the chance to check out the full season ahead of time, and his review suggests we’ll actually be getting some bangers again.
My Adventures with Superman S3 Premiere – June 14
My Adventures with Superman is an ‘anime-esque’ take on the classic DC superhero, and in my opinion, it’s one of the best adaptations out there. The series blends shonen tropes with good ol’ classic Superman vibes, accomplishing the challenging task of maintaining an optimistic and hopeful tone while still feeling fresh and engaging.
Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness Premiere – June 26
A genuinely new HBO Original, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness will see the return of comedian Larry David in a series that happens to be produced by none other than Barack Obama. The concept: “President and Mrs. Obama want to honour America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the history of the nation on the occasion, but then Larry David calls.” I’m expecting this one to be a funky blend of old-school Drunk History videos and the classic Curb Your Enthusiasm irreverence.
Tons of A24 Movies
After renewing a streaming rights agreement back last year, HBO Max will continue to pick up a mix of both new and older releases that were originally distributed by A24. Some older hits coming to the service that I’d recommend are the incredibly acclaimed thriller Room (2015) and Jonah Hill’s Mid90s. More recent releases that will be coming to streaming for the first time include Pillion, How to Make a Killing, and Undertone.

What’s Up With HBO Max and Paramount?
Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten any more concrete information about what will happen to HBO Max in the context of Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Last we heard, Paramount exec was floating the idea of combining HBO Max and Paramount+ into a single streaming service, but Paramount execs have also been claiming they’ll allow Warner Bros. to continue to operate with independence. It’ll still take some time before that deal is finalized, assuming it even gets approved.
