Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Is Bringing Back a Major Dead Character in an Unexpected Way

Spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 and seemingly Season 2 follow below.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is bringing back a fan-favorite character that tragically died.

Deadline has reported that Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, will return in the next season of Dexter: Resurrection. Batista has been in every single season of Dexter in some form since the very beginning, but he met an unfortunate end in Season 1 of Resurrection. After trying to bring Dexter to justice, he ended up being shot and killed by the season’s antagonist, Leon Prater. It was a tragic conclusion to the character’s arc and one that punished Dexter for trying to have it all.

However, Batista will be back once again in Season 2. The actor was seen on set filming a scene with Michael C. Hall in Times Square. Interestingly, he was sporting a more colorful outfit than the last time we saw him, with a Hawaiian shirt, his signature hat, and his gun holster. This seems to suggest that Zayas is returning as one of Dexter’s ghosts, preserved in an outfit from when he was a detective in Florida. Various characters have appeared after their deaths to guide or antagonize Dexter over the course of the franchise, but they’re not literal ghosts. They’re more like manifestations of Dexter’s conscience, so Batista may represent some kind of internal guilt for the titular serial killer this time around.

His inclusion makes sense, especially as Joey Quinn, another cop from Dexter’s past, will also return this season. It’s unclear how that story will unravel, but hopefully the writers are smart enough to recognize they can’t repeat Batista’s arc with another Miami Metro detective. Either way, it seems like we’re in for another suspenseful season of Dexter.

Batista also isn’t the only dead character returning in Dexter: Resurrection, but the other one may not be as dead as we thought. We won’t spoil it here, but you can click here for more details. Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime this fall.
