Dandadan’s First Three Episodes Are Coming to Theaters a Month Before Its Netflix Premiere

Today, Gkids announced the theatrical release of the first three episodes of the hotly anticipated anime series, Dandadan, a month before its debut on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

According to a press release, the world theatrical premiere of Dandadan (under the name Dandadan: First Encounter) will begin its theatrical screenings in Asia on August 31, Europe on September 7, and North America on September 13. Dandadan: First Encounter will be in select U.S. New York and Los Angeles theaters. Likewise, the global rollout of Dandadan: First Encounter, which plans to cover over 50 countries, including Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa, is set to begin in mid-September.

Dandadan, originally created by Tatsu Yukinobu, is a supernatural manga series being adapted into an anime by Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Devilman Crybaby studio Science Saru. It follows a high school girl and descendant from a family of spirit mediums called Momo Ayase and her classmate Ken Takakura, an occult nerd. The two’s friendship begins after they deny each other’s belief in ghosts and aliens, only to find out that both are very real and they will need each other’s help to overcome the paranormal activity running amok in their hometown.

The anime’s theatrical premiere will also feature an exclusive video interview with the manga’s creator and editor Yukinobu Tatsu and Shihei Lin, anime director Fuga Yamashiro, and actors Shion Wakayama (Momo) and Natsuki Hanae (Okarun).

“When making this series into an anime, I incorporated playful and visually stunning techniques unique to video to create a very fun structure for the series,” Yamamshiro wrote in a statement. “I believe you will enjoy it in a slightly different way from the manga and I hope you have a good time at the theatrical release!”
