Chuck Russell, the director behind movies like The Mask and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, has died at 74.
The filmmaker behind some of the most memorable movies of the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s unexpectedly passed away at his San Diego-area home Wednesday, July 22, 2026, his family told TMZ. Details regarding his death were not immediately made clear, though the site said that the local fire department was dispatched to his home Wednesday afternoon “following a report of a medical emergency involving an unconscious male.”
Russell, born in May 1958, made his directing debut with 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. It brought an impactful start to his career as a director and was immediately followed by his The Blob remake in 1988.
Russell then went on to team with Jim Carrey to deliver quintessential ’90s film The Mask in 1994. In 1996 and 2000, he released Eraser and Bless the Child, respectively, and in 2002, helped bring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to the big screen with The Scorpion King.
Russell’s career as a director then slowed down in the 2000s, with his next project, Fringe, arriving six years later in 2010, and I Am Wrath then premiering in 2016. The final three films he directed were Junglee (2019), Paradise City (2022), and Witchboard (2024).
Russell’s The Mask earned an Oscar nomination at the 67th Academy Awards in 1995. Fans of his work have already taken to social media to share their condolences with his family and fond memories of his work.
