This Day in Gaming 🎂

In retro news I’m celebrating the 22nd birthday of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. I have fond memories of scoring this at launch and being blown away by the delightfully weird-arse content within. I’m talking 500 “VR” challenges and alternative missions that let us control Snake and Raiden in sorties ranging from classic sneaking to absurdities like battling giant soldiers.

What were the absolute cherries on top here? “Snake Tales” mode, which consisted of five non-canonical side missions starring our beloved (and underutilized) Solid Snake. Plus a Skateboarding Mode (PS2 exclusive), inspired by Konami’s Evolution Skateboarding. Nailing tricks and smashing objectives on a Big Shell halfpipe was as radical as it sounds.

Meanwhile, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled speeds in at 31% off, a remaster that stays true to the original while adding the online play that 1999-me could never even have conceived of, let alone hoped for.

Purchase Cheap for PC

PC gamers can grab Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Saints Row: The Third for free—two crime-filled open-world epics that defined their eras. The latter is particularly amusing, being a GTA clone that evolved into an over-the-top parody, complete with an alien invasion storyline.
