Sony Is Still Updating the PS3, Nearly 20 Years Later

Surprise! A new update for the near 20-year-old PlayStation 3 is rolling out today, March 18.

As detailed on the official PlayStation website, the 200MB system software update 4.93 for the PS3 — which last received an update a year ago — intends to “improve system performance” and requires owners to renew their Blu-ray player encryption key.

Though the patch notes are very brief and to the point, PlayStation Lifestyle posits that the surprise update is likely hoping to plug security issues and tackle jailbreaks.

“Please note, to play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system needs a renewed Blu-ray player encryption key,” Sony warned. “Please update your PS3 system software to the latest version to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key.”

To download the update, you need at least 200 MB of free space on either the PS3 hard disc drive or your removable storage media. As always, Sony advises that you “always update your PS3 system to the latest version of the system software” to ensure “you can enjoy additional features” as well as “improved usability and enhanced security.” If you don’t update, your Blu-ray collection will be unplayable.

The update comes just a few weeks after the removal of Netflix from the PS3. The streaming service first hit PS3 via Blu-ray disc in 2009, with a native app arriving the following year so users didn’t have to insert an instant streaming disc into their console.

In related PlayStation news, we recently learned that Sony is continuing to “evolve” its PlayStation Portal remote player with its own new system software update. This patch introduces improvements designed to “deliver higher visual fidelity, smoother interactions, and a more seamless overall experience” with 1080p High Quality Mode for a “refined streaming experience.”
