Single-Player RTS Roguelike ‘Project Citadel’ Announced

Developer Last Keep, a studio comprised of ex-Ensemble Studios talent who worked on renowned strategy games like Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, and Halo Wars, have announced Project Citadel, the codename for what the team describes as “an RTS for a new generation of gamers.” It’s in development for PC and will be released on Steam Early Access in 2025.

Project Citadel is a single-player real-time strategy roguelike aiming for an endlessly replayable campaign comprised of easily digestible five-minute gameplay chunks. Last Keep says Citadel has “long-term metaprogression” with procedural generation in gameplay that helps ensure that you never experience the same exact thing twice. Check out the first screenshots in the gallery below and the teaser trailer above.

“We started Last Keep, with our wealth of experience making strategy games, to modernize the RTS,” said studio CEO Dave Pottinger. “We grew up making RTS games. We love the genre, but it needs fresh ideas. We’re going to make deep, meaningful RTS gameplay accessible to everyone. With Project Citadel, all you need is to pick up a controller or mouse and jump into the action.”

IGN will have more on Project Citadel as development progresses. You can wishlist it on Steam if you’re interested.
