Last Chance to Get a Free Lord of the Rings LEGO Set When You Buy The Shire

LEGO has done something it rarely does: bring back a GWP. A GWP is a “Gift With Purchase,” a smaller LEGO set you get for free when you buy certain other sets from the LEGO Store. Right now, LEGO has brought back the Lord of the Rings Sméagol & Déagol set as a GWP when you buy The Shire LEGO set (see it at LEGO Store). It’s a fun little bonus that gives you an extra incentive to pick up The Shire, which is an excellent build on its own. If you want the Sméagol & Déagol set, however, today is your last chance, as the GWP will be gone tomorrow.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Shire

MSRP: $269.99Ages: 18+Set #: 10354Pieces: 2,017

The Shire set is a terrific build for any fan of The Lord of the Rings. It depicts the placid rolling hills of Hobbiton, specifically, the hill Bilbo’s house is situated under. You build three rooms of his house, with windows and doors. But you also build other things shown in the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf’s cart, the fireworks tent, and Bilbo’s party pavilion, where you can turn a dial to make him disappear. Check out our in-depth We Build LEGO The Shire feature for details on the building process and the result.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol (GWP)

MSRP: $24.99 (but only available free as a GWP)Ages: 18+Set #: 40761Pieces: 181

The Sméagol & Déagol GWP is a set that depicts a scene from the opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It’s a flashback to a peaceful day when Sméagol (before he became Gollum) and his cousin Déagol are fishing in a little boat on a gentle lake. What could possibly go wrong?

The set has you build the little fishing boat, along with some water, the shore, and a tree. You also get Sméagol and Déagol minifigures and two fishing pole accessories. But all of this sits on stands that let it hover over an underwater area, where Déagol gets dragged down by a big fish and finds the One Ring, a miniature version of which is also included.

The movie scene ends in tragedy, as Sméagol insists he should have it because it’s his birthday. The two cousins end up fighting over the magical ring, with Sméagol choking his cousin to death to obtain it.

But you don’t have to have all that darkness play out if you don’t want to. And thankfully, The Shire set of Bilbo’s party day is a much happier and livelier place to be. If you want the Sméagol and Déagol set, grab it by the end of the day because chances are, when it’s gone this time, it’s gone for good.
