Ben Stiller is reprising his role as Hal L. in Adam Sandler-led sports comedy sequel Happy Gilmore 2.
As reported by Variety, Stiller was spotted in costume on the set of Happy Gilmore 2 in New Jersey. He’ll join other returning cast members such as Sandler as Happy Gilmore himself, Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, and Julie Brown as Virginia Venit.
Netflix didn’t respond to Variety’s request for comment regarding Stiller’s casting but photos of the shoot did emerge, showing the obviously much older character but still with the handlebar moustache.
Happy Gilmore 2 still lacks a release date but was finally announced proper by Netflix in May after a long stream of rumors. The first film was released in 1996 and told the story of aspiring hockey star Happy Gilmore as he joined the Professional Golfers’ Association Tour.
While Sandler co-wrote Happy Gilmore with Tim Herlihy and Dennis Dugan directed, no such roles have been revealed as of yet. A handful of new stars have been announced though, such as Nick Swardson, Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, and Travis Kelce.
Sandler previously teased the plot on the New Heights podcast, saying “the movie itself picks up from an older guy who played golf a long time. Some stuff goes on in his life, and he’s different. He’s a bit of a mess. And then we try to get his life cooking again.”
