This Day in Gaming 🎂

In retro news, I’m belting a slime-shaped pinata with a ‘17’ on it for Dragon Quest IV: The Chapters of the Chosen. For many Aussies, said Nintendo DS port was our gateway into this legendary RPG series (due to non-existent local releases of the first three NES titles). It worked out kinda well because IV is the first entry in the Zenithia trilogy, and, despite its age, the episodic, time-hopping storytelling held up quite well (i.e., experience the backstories of your four future companions first, then, your hero quest to recruit them all). Ah, what a series.

Nice Savings for Nintendo Switch

On Switch, I couldn’t ignore Donkey Kong Bananza. The big ape has been synonymous with platforming excellence since 1981, when Shigeru Miyamoto snuck him into arcades as Mario’s first foe. Also, Street Fighter 6 is an irresistible pick. I’ve lost count of how many versions of Ryu I’ve uppercutted across the years, but Capcom always nails the comeback with new mechanics like the Drive System.

Donkey Kong Bananza (-19%) – A$89 Kong barrels back in with vine-swinging chaos and banana-fuelled mayhem.Pokemon Legends Z-A (-23%) – Target’s doing this preorder cheaper than Amazon, apparently!Street Fighter 6 NS2 (-38%) – A$58 Uppercut wallets as hard as opponents.GTA Trilogy Def. (-63%) – A$29.90 Liberty, Vice, and San Andreas for the price of a servo pie.The Outer Worlds (-76%) – A$10.90 Space capitalism never looked this funny or this cheap.

Exciting Bargains for Xbox

Over on Series X, Doom: The Dark Ages is particularly tempting. Few franchises can reinvent themselves across decades, but id Software still finds ways to make demons explode in interesting ways. Dragon Age: Veilguard Deluxe is another standout. BioWare’s world-building remains second to none, and the Veilguard premise brings fresh energy to a series that once redefined Western RPGs.

Pure Scores for PlayStation

PS5 players should look twice at Persona 5 Royal. It’s a director’s cut that went from cult darling to mainstream sensation, complete with jazzy menus so stylish they have been studied in design schools. And Doom Eternal is an adrenaline shot of metal and mayhem, made sweeter by its Mick Gordon soundtrack that melts speakers as easily as demons.

Borderlands 4 (-17%) – A$99 Loot, shoot, and (most likely) laugh yourself silly.Ghost of Yōtei (-21%) – A$99 Samurai drama that’s looking sharp enough to cut your budget.Mafia: The Old Country (-12%) – A$79 Forget offers you can’t refuse, here’s one you should.Persona 5 Royal (-65%) – A$33.20 Stylish turn-based teen angst for chump change.Doom Eternal (-75%) – A$13.70 Eternal bargain, eternal carnage.

Purchase Cheap for PC

Today, PC’s biggest eyebrow-raiser is RoboCop: Rogue City. I grew up on Paul Verhoeven’s satirical brutality, so stepping back into Alex Murphy’s visor feels like a bizarre wish fulfilled. And Kingdom Come: Royal Ed. still impresses with its uncompromising realism, even if learning medieval swordplay felt harder than Dark Souls.

RoboCop: Rogue City (-92%) – A$5.80 Half man, half machine, all discount.Kingdom Come Royal Ed. (-80%) – A$11.30 No dragons, no fireballs, just broke peasants like us.Valheim (-50%) – A$15.20 Chop trees, fight trolls, brag endlessly.Watch Dogs 2 (-90%) – A$7.90 Hack the planet without hacking your bank.Crusader Kings III (-50%) – A$34.90 Intrigue, betrayal, and medieval soap opera.

How to Watch the Twilight Movies in Chronological Order

In 2008, Lionsgate released their relatively low-budget adaptation of a popular YA vampire novel. While some people suspected that this little movie might be successful, Twilight, the story of Bella Swan (Kirsten Stewart) and her bloodsucking boyfriend Edward (Robert Pattinson), would go on to become a global smash hit, making […]
