This Day in Gaming 🎂

In retro news, I’m lighting 17 candles on a cake baked for Trauma Center: Second Opinion, the surgical sim that turned my Wiimote into a scalpel for better or worse. (Mostly worse.) Back in 2008, few games dared to marry high-stakes medical drama with twitchy motion-controlled gameplay, and yet Atlus did just that, handing us the scalpel, forceps, and adrenaline shots to save lives under impossible pressure. It was tense, it was odd, and it was unforgettable.

I remember the thrill of pulling off a perfect suture as the on-screen vitals flatlined, or the sheer terror of battling the game’s bizarre “medical” enemies, like the microscopic GUILT parasites. Trauma Center wasn’t just about steady hands; it was about nerves of steel, and it made you feel like every flick of the wrist was the difference between life and death. It carved itself a cult following and proved the Wii could deliver more than party games. Somebody remaster me this series. Stat.

On Nintendo, Hogwarts Legacy is a steal for those who missed its belated arrival on Switch. It may not match its beefier console cousins in fidelity, but the magic of exploring Hogwarts still holds true. Meanwhile, Celeste remains one of the best indie platformers ever crafted, and knowing its entire design stemmed from a game jam prototype makes it even more impressive.

On Xbox Series X, Mass Effect Legendary Ed. is a no-brainer at under ten bucks. Pure Scores for PlayStation

On PS5, Alan Wake 2 Del. Ed. is my top pick, with Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake even cameoing as a background character in the game. That’s dedication. The Witcher 3 still holds up thanks to CD Projekt’s attention to detail, right down to Geralt’s beard growing in real-time unless you get it trimmed.
