Amazon has officially kicked off its Labor Day sale, and there are already some decent deals worth browsing ahead of the weekend. If you've been looking to grab an e-reader, you'll be happy to know that the classic Kindle and the Kindle Paperwhite Kids version are both on sale at Amazon right now.
It's worth noting that although these Kindle deals aren't that steep, the prices are pretty similar to what we saw on Prime Day earlier in the summer. It would seem that Kindle deals in general have been few and far between this year, so any discount is worth noting if you're in the market for one.
Amazon Kindle Deals Available Now
Out of the two Kindle deals available in the sale, the standard 16 GB is the most affordable and most likely the version you should buy. This is the Kindle that I personally own and it has worked great for me in the place of actual physical books. The battery seems to last forever and the backlight works great if you're planning on reading in bed at night. It obviously works great for Kindle books, but you can also download other e-books from free book sites like Libby (though you'll need a library card) if you don't want to pay for a subscription.
The Kindle Paperwhite Kids is quite a bit more expensive, but it offers a more focused reading experience for kids. This e-reader includes a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, which comes with access to thousands of free books, games, and videos. The Kindle Paperwhite Kids is also waterproof, which really just means it can withstand accidental dunks and spills. It also comes with a two-year worry-free guarantee that allows you to get a replacement if it breaks.
Is There a Cheaper Alternative?
There are quite a few tablets built for reading out there, but if you're looking for the absolute cheapest option, Amazon's line of Fire tablets are a pretty good budget option. You can currently get the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus tablet for just $64.99, at a pretty big 46% discount. Although these tablets aren't as powerful as an iPad, they work just fine for reading when you download the Kindle app. The cheaper price does include an ad-supported lockscreen, but you can just ignore those.
Should You Buy Now or Wait for the Next Sale?
These Kindle deals are admittedly not that great, but they are some of the only ones we've seen so far this year. That being said, if you're hoping to find a better deal, it's probably worth waiting a little longer. Amazon recently announced that it will be having another October Prime Day sale this year; last year, it was selling the same Kindle model available for $74.99. Following that Amazon's Black Friday promotions are usually really good and will likely have lower prices on Kindles than we are seeing during this Labor Day sale.
But if you don't want to wait another month or two to save $10 dollars on the base Kindle, it's still a good time to buy. Labor Day is also a good time to shop for books in general, thanks to the big Barnes and Noble book sale happening right now.
