Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell said he has just five years left to live amid his ongoing battle with cancer.
The legendary horror actor gave fans an update on his health during an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show earlier this week. He explained his cancer diagnosis is something that is “treatable” but “not curable.”
“In my world, I’m in a five-year prognosis,” Campbell said. “The type of cancer I have, which I don’t want to get into, the current thing is a five-year deal.”
The show’s host then asked the 68-year-old actor for clarification, questioning if that meant he had five years left to live.
“Give or take, yeah,” Campbell replied.
The actor announced his cancer diagnosis in March of this year, confirming that convention appearances and work in general would “take a back seat to treatment.” He added at the time that he was “a tough old son-of-a-bitch” and that he expected “to be around for a while.”
During the new interview, Campbell admitted there are plenty of stories of others fighting cancer who outlive their initial timelines, adding that medical technology could become more advanced during his own fight. For him, though, the real battle is “to live with it, not die from it.”
“You can go down a massive rabbit hole,” he continued. “The cancer rabbit hole is enormous. You can go into focus groups of 10,000 guys who have the exact thing you have. I won’t touch it with a 10-foot pole.”
He added, “They say there’s a whole mental component. You start getting all this bad news, and you’re starting breakfast with a s**t sandwich with a side of what-the-f**k for a couple of months as it all comes in. Then, you deal with it, and you have to make this decision of, ‘OK, but do I have to stop everything that I’m doing because of this?’ Well, no.”
Campbell is currently promoting his new film, Ernie & Emma, which he directed, wrote, and starred in. It follows a man who sets out on a journey to spread his wife’s ashes following her death. The movie’s official tagline is as follows: “‘Til death do us part – and a little longer.”
“I crack up at the people who are the ‘How old can I get? How can I change my lifestyle so I live the longest?'” Campbell said earlier in the new interview. “It’s funny; the more people obsess about that crap, I’m like, ‘You’re not really living. You just have a new hobby that you’re obsessing over.’ What is the quality of these extra years? So, you get five more years – so what are you doing with those five years? Obsessing about the five years, or are you actually doing something?”

Campbell also addressed his situation with a follow-up post on X/Twitter. In the post, he said, “Cancer is all the rage, but I’ve said plenty and I need to get back to the business of living.” He also recently confirmed he will not return to play his long-running Evil Dead character, Ash Williams.
