Fable’s Main Quest Will Take About 20 Hours to Beat

Fable‘s main quest will take around 20 hours to beat, Playground Games has confirmed.

Associate game directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler shared the estimated length for the 2027 fantasy RPG during a group Q&A attended by Polygon at gamescom 2026. While the Xbox and Playground say Fable will have plenty of content to keep players busy for as long as they want, players won’t be sinking hundreds of hours into the main story just to reach the credits.

“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy said.

As sprawling RPGs have continued to fill the space, that might come up a bit short for what some players were expecting. Open-world games like Elden Ring, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla have famously delivered massive worlds with main quests that could have players spending 50 hours or more just to complete the story. For Fable, that won’t be the case, but longtime fans probably expected that.

Howlongtobeat has the original 2004 Fable‘s main quest clocking in at about 12 and a half hours. Fable 2 isn’t much longer at 13 hours, and Fable 3 inches just further past that at 13 and a half hours. If anything, next year’s Fable reboot is already shaping up to be the longest in the series, and pushing its main campaign on much longer would have it launching with a story almost twice as long as the one in the original game.

That’s not to say that players won’t be able to get lost in Fable’s fantasy world if they so choose. Kennedy promised that the new Fable game’s “life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.” When one attendee remarked that Fable is “not a huge game,” Littler clarified, again, that “you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do.”

For comparison, completionists typically spend about 30 hours seeing all there is to see in the first game and around 50 to do the same in the second and third games. Fable seems to be falling in line with that trend, but we won’t truly see all it has to offer until Playground and Xbox see it in players’ hands next year.

Fable is currently set with a February 23, 2027, release date for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. IGN got to see one of its full quests in action at gamescom 2026 and came away even more excited to see what the full game has to offer. After first being announced six years ago in July 2020, director Ralph Fulton tells us he’s happy to see it launch alongside a bunch of other games and relieved that Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t one of them.
