Vampire Hunter D is a franchise that has enjoyed a long, healthy lifespan as a series of Japanese light novels, but has never really been explored to its fullest in other media. The last Vampire Hunter D film to be released was 2001’s Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Luckily for fans of the wandering hero known only as D, there’s been some new momentum surrounding the franchise recently, including both a brand-new Western comics series and a theatrical rerelease.
First up, Dark Horse Comics is releasing a new miniseries called Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood. The series isn’t an adaptation of one of Hideyuki Kikuchi’s novels, but is rather an original story set in that post-apocalyptic universe. Fortress of Blood is written by Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) and illustrated by Filipe Andrade (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr).
The creative team also includes colorist Jordie Bellaire and letterer Frank Cvetkovic. Andrade illustrated the main cover for issue #1, with variants by Riccardo Federici and Yoshitaka Amano. Here’s Dark Horse’s official summary of the first issue:
The first official comic series based on Hideyuki Kikuchi’s Vampire Hunter D! A vampire lord has marshalled his forces and is marching on human settlements aiming to leave no survivors! One thing stands among his path to the next city—the old fortress. There, a family of outcasts will need to buy enough time for the humans to flee. And wandering this same path is the beautiful, indomitable hunter—half-human, half-vampire—known as D.
Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood #1 will be released on December 16. You can preorder a copy at your local comic shop.
On the film front, GKIDS revealed that Bloodlust is getting a theatrical rerelease in 2027, just after the film’s 25th anniversary.

There are no further details regarding a release date or possible 4k Blu-ray release, but hopefully Bloodlust returning to theaters will spark new interest in the series and pave the way for another film or anime series. Previously, an anime called Vampire Hunter D: Resurrection was announced in 2015, but work on the series seemingly stalled out during the COVID-19 pandemic.
