It's Been 15 Years Since Game of Thrones' HBO Debut, And Now There's Official British Money to Celebrate

It's been 15 years since the first season of Game of Thrones debuted on HBO, captivating audiences with the story of Ned Stark, Jon Snow, and Daenerys Targaryen.

The show's hit first season saw Ned established as its hero and Dany as the last hope for the Targaryen dynasty — what could possibly go wrong? Lots, it turned out, though 15 years on we're still talking about it all, so the series clearly did enough right.

Now, to celebrate that 15th anniversary, the British Royal Mint has created two collectible 50 pence coins featuring both ice and fire-themed designs. The first features a dragon breathing crimson fire. The second, meanwhile, features the Night King with piercing blue eyes.

Prices start at £15 (around $20) for one of the designs without color, or £27.50 ($37) for versions with colored additions. Feeling flush with coin? You can spend an astonishing £2,420 ($3,245) on a gold version. Just don't spend your purchase by accident.

It's been an expensive week for hardcore Game of Thrones fans, following the announcement of a luxurious £1,500 / $2,200 edition of the series' first book from The Folio Society, aimed at those with pockets as deep as a Lannister's. Will the series ever continue? When last we heard about the status of The Winds of Winter, publisher Bantam Books denied rumors that the long-awaited book would launch in 2026. Writer George R.R. Martin is still adamant that he'll finish his story, though has said that fans shouldn't expect another writer to take over if he dies.

While everyone continues to wait, you can catch up on everything we know about the next Game of Thrones book. And, of course, there's Game of Thrones spinoff series House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to enjoy — plus word on a possible Arya Stark sequel series as well.
