GTA 6 Story Features Distinct 'Chapters' — Could Red Dead Redemption 2 Hold the Clue to How It Works?

GTA fans are discussing how the story in Grand Theft Auto 6 will be structured, following the apparent confirmation that it will be separated into chapters, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.

An official reference to content becoming unlocked through various chapters of the game can be seen on Rockstar's website, where the developer discusses its various bonuses available in GTA 6's $100 Ultimate Edition. These bonuses will not all be available straight away, Rockstar has cautioned, noting instead that the extras "are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter."

Various cars, safe houses, sidequests and guns can be accessed as fans play through GTA 6 — and it sounds as if the game will feature a chapter-based structure. Exactly how this will work — whether the game's world will open up slowly over time, and feature Red Dead Redemption 2-style time jumps — remains to be seen, though fans have already begun speculating.

"Chapters like RDR2 could allow time jumps or bigger changes to the map," wrote GTA fan VimDim, in a reddit thread discussing the matter.

"In RDR 2 these chapters were based in different locations of the map," noted SquashTurbulent5309, "so GTA 6 story might be the same."

"The story will be divided into chapters with each one probably mostly featuring a different part of the map and different vibes in terms of mood and overall tone," suggested Any_Objecct_5151. "It doesn't mean you can't go explore other places or anything though."

That said, this is a GTA game rather than one set on the frontier. It seems unlikely that players will lose access to properties or cars acquired earlier in the game as the action moves from location to location, even if the current action is now centered elsewhere.

"Hopefully we keep the safehouses for the entire game instead of having only one per chapter like in RDR2," wrote llambordins. Replied aneuryst: "Probably will, we only had one per chapter in RDR2 cause it was a camp that moved. I'm sure apartments/houses in this won't move."

Need to catch up on all of today's GTA 6 news? Rockstar has now announced GTA 6's price and also a pricier $100 Ultimate Edition, released 63 new GTA 6 screenshots, and confirmed that physical editions of the game won't include a disc in the box.
