Meryl Streep Calls Out 'Marvel-ized' Movies for Sticking to 'Boring' Good Guy vs. Bad Guy Stories

The Devil Wears Prada 2 star Meryl Streep is ready for a break from the "Marvel-ized" formula of villains vs. the good guys.

The movie-making legend's comments on the state of cinematic storytelling during a recent conversation with Hits Radio. When speaking about the messy attitude of her iconic Miranda Priestly character, she explained why she feels a person who isn't so cut and dry is often more fun to watch.

"I feel like you get a realistic view," Streep said about how The Devil Wears Prada 2 portrays Miranda Priestly. "I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains, we got the good guys, and it's so boring."

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the latest so-called legacy sequel to come out of Hollywood. Instead of putting Tom Cruise back into a jet or strapping Proton Packs onto new Ghostbusters, this years-in-the-making follow-up brings back the original cast – Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and more – for a new story set around the rapidly changing world of fashion journalism.

It's been 20 years since the original The Devil Wears Prada premiered in theaters in 2006, so some changes for its larger-than-life characters are to be expected. Streep said the blurred lines between good guys and bad guys and the unexpected turns they may take resulted in a more entertaining film.

"What's really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed, and some of the villains are human and interesting, and have their own strengths," she added. "That's what I like about [The Devil Wears Prada 2]. It's messier."

The Devil Wears Prada 2 gave Streep's Miranda Priestly a new look when it premiered yesterday, May 1, 2026. We gave the film a 7/10 in our review.

"If you're looking to effortlessly slip back into the glossy and charming world of New York high fashion," we said, "you'll be delighted by the familiarity The Devil Wears Prada 2 provides. But if you want exact same characters that you met in the first movie, you might find the movie quite a change of pace."
