The live-action Street Fighter film in the works with Legendary and Capcom is reportedly on the hunt for a new director.
THR reports today that Danny and Michael Philippou, best known for A24's horror hit Talk to Me, are no longer directing the video game adaptation. IGN has reached out to Legendary for comment.
It was first reported that the duo was involved in Street Fighter last year, but it appears as though circumstances have since changed. According to the THR report, scheduling is "partly to blame." Legendary and Capcom, likely wanting to jump on the recent string of video game adaptation successes, reportedly wanted to roll into Street Fighter sooner rather than later.
A24 announced in April, however, that the Philippous are working on Bring Her Back, a new original horror movie starring Sally Hawkins. THR reports that that film is set to begin shooting later this month, apparently posing a conflict with Legendary and Capcom's hopes.
A project as big as Street Fighter seemed like a natural progression of the filmmaking duo's quick rise in the industry. The two were previously best known for their popular YouTube channel RackaRacka, but Talk to Me swiftly put them on the Hollywood map, with rave reviews and solid enough box office to get a sequel greenlit that the Philippous will return to direct.
Now, Legendary and Capcom will seek a new director to take the helm. The adaptation has largely remained mysterious aside from the Philippous' former attachment to it, with other creatives and plot details being kept under wraps.
As part of a previously announced deal with Legendary, Capcom will be involved in all future Street Fighter adaptations. Street Fighter last jumped into the live-action movie fray with 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, although the most famous live-action film is 1994's Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
