Beloved American football drama Friday Night Lights is reportedly getting a reboot at Peacock, though original series stars like Kyle Chandler aren’t expected to return.
As reported by Deadline, the rumored Friday Night Lights reboot has found a home at Peacock after a “competitive battle” between it and Netflix. The series is reportedly now in development but no release window was shared.
The Friday Night Lights reboot will follow a new cast of characters playing for a high school football team in the wake of a devastating hurricane. They and their coach undertake the monumental task of competing for the Texas High School State Championship and give their town a new hope.
While its original cast members won’t return, original showrunner Jason Katims, original director Peter Berg, and original producer Brian Grazer will lead the reboot.
This will be the fourth iteration of Friday Night Lights, which was created by H.G. Bissinger as a non-fiction novel released in 1990. It was adapted into a film in 2004 and again into a TV show in 2006, where it ran for five seasons until 2011.
It’s widely regarded one of the best series in recent memory, with IGN placing it 40th on our best TV shows of all time list. In our 9/10 review of Season 1, IGN said: “Sometimes great television doesn’t need a unique hook or an edgy or dark side to be something special; it just needs terrific writing and acting, something this show has an abundance of.”
